The unveiling of the Ford Mustang Mach-E, the company’s first all-electric SUV, took place just a block away from Tesla’s design center, giving rise to rumors that Elon Musk was upset about the location choice. Electrek approached Ford’s chairman, Bill Ford, to ask him about the coincidence, and his response was simply a smile.

In an interview, Ford spoke about the company’s commitment to electrification, citing the Mustang Mach-E as an example. He explained that choosing to electrify Ford’s most iconic nameplate would galvanize the internal team and signal to the world that they are serious about electrification.

A question about the Mach-E taking away sales from Tesla was met with Ford’s straightforward response that he would take sales from wherever they came. He also expressed confidence in the Mach-E as a strong entry to the marketplace, citing its range of 210-300 miles, depending on the trim level.

When asked about the company’s plans for the future, Ford indicated that they were “all in on electrification,” and that they would be taking a multi-pronged approach, including a joint venture with Rivian.

Finally, in response to a query about the possibility of an all-electric two-door Mustang coupe, Ford stated “never say never.” With the Mach-E poised to make a splash in the electric vehicle market, only time will tell what Ford’s next move in the EV world will be.
