Ford has remained tight-lipped about its Mustang Mach-E electric SUV since its unveiling last November. However, an interview with Darren Palmer, the product chief for Ford EVs, sheds light on the progress of the highly anticipated vehicle. According to Palmer, the Mach-E is “close to sign-off” for vehicle engineering and will meet its 300-mile range target for the long-range model. The company has even allowed Mustang enthusiasts to take the Mach-E for a test drive. Palmer also hinted at the possibility of adding all-electric Explorer or Escape models to its future EV lineup. To fulfill its goal of converting gas-car owners to electric, 80% of Mustang Mach-E pre-orders are for the long-range model, capable of travelling up to 300 miles per charge. Palmer confirmed that Ford is developing to EPA standards and expects to hit its range target. The Mach-E also needs the performance expected from the Mustang brand. To ensure success, Ford has been showing the Mach-E to Mustang clubs and enthusiasts, with positive early response. The company’s plan to use its most iconic nameplates for EVs is a sign of its commitment to the sector and its effort to convert more consumers to EVs.
