Porsche engineers recently rented a Tesla Model 3 through Turo, an online car-sharing platform, in order to test out the latest Autopilot software update released by Tesla. The electric vehicle giant’s newest addition to its suite of self-driving features is called Smart Summon and allows Tesla owners to “summon” their parked vehicle to them using their mobile phone. Porsche’s engineers were keen to test this new feature and were impressed with the vehicle’s enhancement under the V10 software upgrade. While it may seem odd that Porsche would have to rent a Tesla instead of using their own resources, it’s not the first time that we’ve seen automakers outside of Tesla taking this approach to research and development. Regardless, it’s encouraging to see Porsche taking an interest in Tesla’s software and electric vehicle technology. As electric vehicle technology continues to develop, it’s important for automakers to invest in both creating their own advancements and studying the capabilities of their competition.
