Tesla’s highly anticipated secret project, called “Roadrunner,” aims to produce cheaper and more energy-dense battery cells using machines that “build the machine.” The company’s goal is to achieve a price point of $100 per kWh, which would enable electric vehicles to cost the same as gas cars without subsidies. Tesla’s partnership with Panasonic has so far led to the production of industry-leading batteries, but the automaker is determined to make its own cells for its electric vehicles. Rumored to have been working on this project for months, Tesla has reportedly tested prototype cells already. “Roadrunner” uses technologies developed by Tesla’s Canadian research lab led by Jeff Dahn, as well as some recently acquired technologies, to produce new cells that offer greater energy density at a lower cost. In addition to the new cells, Tesla is also working on module and battery pack improvements and is said to be moving away from wire bonding on the cells toward laser-welding technology. Sources suggest that Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, is aiming to have one of the new battery packs installed in a Model S or Model X by the company’s “Battery Investor Day” in April.
