Tesla has been “anti-selling” its Model 3 since its launch in 2017, prioritizing the Model S and Model X as it ramped up production. However, it seems that Tesla is now shifting gears and moving towards promoting the Model 3. The company is now incentivizing its sales team to sell the performance model-y-version/” title=”Tesla Boosts Gigafactory Texas for High-Volume Production, Introduces New Model Y Version”>version of the vehicle by offering test drives and a $300 commission for each sale of the new version. Until now, Model 3 sales were handled by Tesla’s inside sales team and owner advisors in stores weren’t given extra compensation to sell the vehicle. The commission is also going to the store’s entire team and not just the specific owner advisor who closed the Model 3 Performance sale. This move comes as Tesla confirmed that it still has about 420,000 Model 3 reservations out of the 30,000 vehicles delivered to date. The automaker even said that it “expects that orders will grow faster than the production rate” now that buyers can test drive the Model 3. By incentivizing sales of the Model 3 Performance version, it appears Tesla is seeking to have a high mix of performance version Model 3 in its total production and deliveries during the second half of the year to help achieve profitability.
