One of Tesla’s most senior executives, Kevin Kassekert, recently left the company. Kassekert oversaw the construction of Tesla’s famous Gigafactories. He joined the company in 2012 as Director of Infrastructure Development, following a decade-long career in the semiconductor industry. By 2016, he had been promoted to VP of People and Places, with top-level responsibilities over Human Resources, Facilities, Construction, and Infrastructure Development. Sources say Tesla removed his oversight of human resources, and he left the company last week. Tesla and Kassekert have not commented on his departure.

Tesla has struggled with staff retention in the past, with high-profile employees leaving the company in quick succession. Some analysts believe CEO Elon Musk’s work ethic is to blame. But others see it differently. According to Ben Schaffer, President of Unplugged Performance, talented engineers are attracted to Elon Musk, who he describes as “the magnet” for top talent. Schaffer argues that Tesla’s mission to solve the world’s biggest problems is also a draw. The end result is a constant cycle of talented people entering and leaving the company.

Despite criticism of Tesla’s high turnover rate, the company continues to attract top talent. Kassekert’s departure may be a loss, but there are talented engineers around the world eager to work with Musk and contribute to Tesla’s mission. As electric vehicles become more mainstream, skilled engineers will become even more valuable. Tesla’s ability to attract and retain top talent will be crucial in the years to come.
