Tesla is transitioning from its first generation Autopilot hardware to its improved second generation hardware to enable level 3 and 4 autonomous driving, and ultimately, fully self-driving capability. Despite skepticism from the industry that Tesla can deliver a level 5 system with this new hardware suite, Elon Musk’s company has a highly valuable asset to draw from—data. Tesla has accumulated 1.3 billion miles of Autopilot data to develop its machine learning system and improve its Autopilot programs, even when the system is not active. While Google has only managed to accumulate 3.5 million miles of autonomous driving data so far, Tesla is adding millions of miles every day. However, the company still has some way to go before the hardware and regulatory needs required for a fully self-driving car can be met.
