Electric Mobility Represents a Real Revolution, Says Continental CTO

Electric mobility is a real revolution and it is not just due to the reduction of CO2. According to Dirk Abendroth, CTO at Continental, a wholesale shift to electric powertrains and related vehicle design has opened up new design possibilities and represents a radical shift in manufacturing.

Abendroth believes that EVs are vital to combat CO2 emissions and will be quicker to adopt by urban drivers with shorter commutes. Although people driving longer distances might be slower to buy an electric vehicle, Abendroth still believes the revolution will happen.

With the shift to electric powertrains, vehicle design enters a new era of radical freedom. An electric motor is considerably smaller than an engine, allowing for a more comfortable cabin. The extra space means designers can make radical changes, including turning seats around or making them swivel seats.

Finally, he believes that automakers will invest billions in manufacturing pure electric vehicles. The manufacturing line of a purely electric car looks completely different than those on combustion-engine platforms. This means a huge investment that will last for decades.

The shift to electric vehicles is not just about lowering CO2 emissions– it’s a game-changing shift towards a new direction and an era of new possibilities. As EVs continue to gain traction in the automobile industry, we can only expect remarkable changes moving forward.
