Electric motorcycles are starting to make a name for themselves in the racing world. This June, Zero Motorcycles plans to take their SR/F to the Pike’s Peak Challenge, a time trial race consisting of 156 turns over nearly 12.5 miles of winding road. The race starts at an elevation of 9,390 feet, then climbs an additional 4,720 feet to finish at an altitude of 14,115 feet. The Zero SR/F has a few racing modifications, including upgraded suspension and Pirelli racing slick tires, and a customized handlebar and peg setup for rider Cory West.

Electric motorcycles have a unique advantage in hill climbing due to their high torque, and the Zero team is hoping to prove that point with their nearly silent run up the mountain. The Gates Carbon Drive system installed on the Zero SR/F uses a belt to transfer power to the rear wheel instead of a chain, adding to the bike’s quiet ride. In an interview, Cory West praised the bike’s quietness, saying “it’s just so quiet.  I can hear things I’ve never heard before on the racetrack.”

While Zero is not the first electric motorcycle manufacturer to take on the Pike’s Peak Challenge, they are hoping to make a mark in the electric racing world. In 2013, the Lightning LS-218 electric superbike made history as the first electric motorcycle to win first place in the contest, beating every other motorcycle in the field, including gas-powered bikes.

This year’s event will take place on June 30th and the results will be highly anticipated in the electric vehicle community. As more and more manufacturers take on the challenge of electric racing, it will be interesting to see how they compete against gas-powered bikes and how they will continue to innovate electric motorcycle technology.
